Meat, cheese, eggs and dairy are pretty expensive too. Beans, legumes, grains and soy are pretty cheap. You can get those things in the regular section of any supermarket. Just use Wild Oats for the things you can't get in the regular grocer's. Think of it as an investment in your health (Dr.s and poor health can be an expense too.)

If the food is too expensive you're buying the wrong foods. Meat is the most expensive stuff out there. Vege, beans, rice etc....are all very inexpensive comparitively. You don't need to shop in a specialty store to find vegan food. You don't need to use organics to be vegan either. Those are choices you make alongside veganism. **

Walmart and other stores sell vegan products, but you have to look for them. Have you ever been to a Kroger? They have a whole health food section, with tons of vegan products. They even have a separate frozen section in the health food area with healthy foods and vegetarian and vegan things. It's great! Cheese is hard to give up, but if you truly want to be vegan, it will be an easy decision to make :) Good luck, and all the best!

If you buy already-prepared vegan food, then yes, it's going to be expensive, but that's very lazy. Anyone who buys already-prepared food is going to be spending more. Also, keep in mind that you should be eating a ton of actual vegetables- not soy meat substitute products. I had a lot of trouble with dairy a while back. I loved cheese- could eat blue Stilton at every sitting. I just simply didn't eat cheese anymore. It's difficult, yes, but that's the decision you've made. Also, I found that avocados can be a substitute for cheese in some things; the buttery consistency and high fat content give it some of the same qualities. On a sandwich, for example, I'd spread some avocado instead of putting cheese on. Not trying to talk you out of being vegan, which is a perfectly legitimate life choice, but you've worded it like it's synonymous with eating healthy. I eat healthy and I'm not vegan or even vegetarian. It can certainly be done. If you are coming from a diet where you're eating a lot of bad crap now, you may want to consider a simple healthy diet before you plunge into vegan diet, so the transition will be a little easier.

Don't confuse eating organic food with eating vegan food. You can be vegan without spending too much money. Buy real food, not processed food. Buy apples, oranges, bananas, broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes. A pound of pasta and a jar of marinara sauce is cheap and vegan.
