Portland residents: how much access do you have to local produce/food

Portland residents: how much access do you have to local produce/food?
I am thinking of moving out to Portland, Oregon. It is important for me to have access to good, healthy foods which I don't think will be a problem there (in hopes there are food co-ops and health food stores around). But it is also important that I have access to local food from gardens and farms. Are there many in the area??? What about a farmer's market? I am especially looking at the Alberta neighborhood, in which I would like your opinion as well. Thanks!

If you want locally grown food, then you are coming to the right city! Portland has all kinds of co-ops, as well as farmer's markets. There is a really big one downtown called the Saturday Market... lots of fresh produce from local farmers, located on the Park Blocks near PSU. Some stores to find organic/healthy food: Zupan's, New Seasons, Whole Foods Market, Food Fight! (vegan grocery store). Giving that you are going to be in Alberta, I think the Whole Foods Market in NE Portland is the closest one to you. ♣
2 :
There are quite a few farmers markets operating around the area during the season. The granddaddy of them all—Portland Farmers Market—has spun off 3 or 4 additional markets on different days of the week. Besides that, there are about 20 other farmers markets operating throughout the metro area. Even a once-a-month market in Alberta. I think New Seasons Market does a great job of providing reasonably priced excellent fresh produce. It is a local chain oriented towards organic foods and products. Whole Foods does decently too, but is much more expensive than New Seasons; there are fewer Whole Foods than New Seasons. With wheels, there are a great number of family farms throughout the area where buying directly from the farmer on their property is common. Many farms also offer U-pick which typically runs about half the price of "they pick". Blueberries, cherries, and raspberries are now in season; strawberry season ended a week or two ago. Farms surround the Portland area quite closely compared to most U.S. metropolitan areas. Sauvie Island is about eleven miles NW of downtown; farmland surrounds the urban growth boundary at about 20 to 25 miles from downtown west, south, and east. Besides all those sources, the Fred Meyer chain has a "nutrition section" in (almost) every store which contains several thousand square feet of bulk foods and organic products. Safeway stores do a little, but not nearly as well as Freddies. There are a few dozen vegan and vegetarian restaurants, some being very nice restaurants, with others being more earthy.

I agree with what the others said. If you can't find fresh local produce in the Portland area, your not trying. There's tons of places all the way down the Valley towards Salem. So, why are you coming to Oregon, did we give you permission to move here ? Just kidding, but jobs are hard to come by and usually don't pay well. Make sure you have all of that covered before you leave to come here

How would I bring a puppy that vomits his food right back out after eating it back to health

How would I bring a puppy that vomits his food right back out after eating it back to health?

You keep him hydrated and take him to a vet to find out what's going on.
2 :
Depends what the cause of the problem is, doesn't it! Could just be the type of food you're feeding it. Has it always done this? Does it have any other symptoms? Why don't you talk to a vet, has the pup been to one yet? Chalice
3 :
Take it to the Vet to find out what is causing the vomiting. It could be a variety of things from allergy to an intestinal blockage but it is NOT normal!
4 :
unfortunately, vomiting is a very vague symptom. it can mean many of things. Is your puppy vaccinated? Has it been parvo tested? There could be an intestinal blockage. There are so many things. If your puppy continues to vomit, dehydration, electrolyte embalances, etc. Your puppy needs to be seen by a vet. They will probably start off with blood work and x-rays.
5 :
Here are some ideas- 1. TAKE HIM TO THE VET 2. Give him more water, and less food. 3. Change his food, slowly. 4. TAKE HIM TO THE VET.
6 :
If it's a pup it may be parvo...get him to the vet asap.
7 :
Depends completely on what's causing the vomiting. The first thing I thought of is megaesophagus, but without more details its hard to give insight.
8 :
my answer was going to be exactly the same as electric dazey's... call a vet ASAP, and make sure its nothing serious, keep him hydrated, and feed smaller portions.
9 :
Call a vet and ask him. You may just have to change dog foods. The puppy may be allergic to corn, wheat, wheat gluten, or soy. Check the ingredients list on the food you're giving him and if meat of some kind (chicken, beef, lamb, turkey, venison, etc.) isn't the first ingredient, change dog foods. One reason to call the vet is to find out if you need to get him some IV or subcutaneous fluids. If he has been doing this for very long, he may be dehydrated, and that could be dangerous. Good luck!
10 :
If your vet has checked him and he doesn't have a disease or illness, try feeding him in very small amounts over several minutes. Some puppies wolf their food and then regurgitate it. There are special dog dishes available that make dogs eat slowly, too.
11 :
Take him to a Vet A.S.A.P !! It's possible he might have ate something that is stuck inside him or he might be really sick

Probably, because you aren't use to the foods. i get like that, sometimes too.
2 :
iunno, but health food isn't healthy either. every day they come out with new studies saying something is bad for us, so y even worry?
3 :
im going to have to disagree with that not that all the junk food doesnt taste good it does but i love carrots and all fruit I enjoy fresh fish and things like that but thats just me
4 :
I know, I hate that. I changed my way of eating, and focused on making veggies in an interesting way to make them taste good. Also, I swear by Cooking Light magazine/annual cookbooks/website. They take a lot of sinful foods and make them healthy without sacrificing taste too much. But there is NO substitution for french fries!
5 :
Because the person cooking them doesn't how to make really healthy food taste really good.
6 :
It certainly makes it a challenge! Maybe we were intended to learn how to control our desires.
7 :
spices marinade how you cook it

I think putting the nutritional info for calories, sat fat, and all that is enough on the part of the restaurant. The rest is up to the consumer. I do think that big corporate "restaurants" like Mickey-Ds add chemicals to their food to give consistent taste and add volume. If the chemicals are shown to cause problems then they should be held responsible because somebody ordering a big mac thinks they are getting a burger, not a buttload of steroids and chemicals.
2 :
No, but they should def have warning signs and better nutritional facts like you get on all food at the grocery store.
3 :
Ultimately, it's up to the consumer. If a person cares about their health, they will eat fast food in moderation, if at all. Personally, I have a Big Mac every couple of months :)
4 :
No. There are no arguments on the other side that I can see. As long as all the necessary information is made available to the consumer, they've done their part.
5 :
Absolutly not! People are responsible for their own health.
6 :
NO!!! It's my choice to eat that crap. More times than not, I will prepare a huge bowl of fresh peas, spinach, parsnips or beet greens. I've tended them in my garden carefully and lovingly for weeks. Once cooked I add a half a stick of butter, a ton of salt and maybe some half and half. Now who do I sue? Thing is... we like what we like. I know this probably isn't what you are after, but perhaps something to think about. I am and will be responsible for what I consume. I don't have any sources, except for the late and great Julia Child, who loved McDonald's french fries. She said something to the effect of, "They used to be so good, when they used good grease. You just have to eat them in moderation. Now that they make them with the "healthy" grease, I don't like them, and won't eat them". Good luck with your project. E.
7 :
Yes to an extend. They should have calories pamphlets and some healthy choices available on the menu. But they are fast food restaurants, therefore the consumer needs to be responsible for the choices they make when they purchase their meals.
8 :
Unless the company representatives or owners are taking a person's hand and shoving their food down their mouth, then they are not at all responsible for their consumers health. It's a free country, we can eat what we want out of what is affordable to each of us. If it's not fast food, we would eat more baked goods which can have tons of sugar and fat in it anyway.(like pastries). It is of our own free will that we eat junk, wherever it comes from. I don't ever remember Mc Donald's saying we have to eat their food to be healthy. It's just there. It tastes good. So many things that are bad for us, seem good. It sucks. it's the way this world is. But we can resist it if we put our minds to it. Really the only good thing to eat is veggies and fruits and grains. All the natural stuff that we were meant to eat, but because of being accustomed to eating meat for a long time, we need the vitamins and minerals from that. And unfortunately, even our fruits and veggies are a little harmful to us to because of the pesticides and pollution absorbed in them. Overall though, it's still better to eat healthier and less-processed foods, but it's ultimately up to each individual adult to decide what they want to put in themselves.
9 :
no, consumers should be responsibe for their health

This is nutrition fact from McDonald's which really help you in your school debate http://nutrition.mcdonalds.com/nutritionexchange/chooseCustomize.do

the government likes to keep poor people uneducated about health and fitness, so poor people only live long enough to be worked to death.
2 :
I wouldnt take my business there...might get robbed or make no money...DUH.
3 :
Supply and demand health food customers usually middle class not your usual ghetto residents
4 :
Its funny how people claim its the government! lol If there was a demand for it and people in the ghetto would actually purchase the food or services, best believe they would have one of those businesses there. If I owned one, the ghetto is the LAST place I'd think to open my business out of fear of loosing money. Its all about money. Thats like putting a vegan food restraurant in the middle of the hood
